Brrr….it’s chilly out there! Don’t get me wrong, I love a cold, crisp day when the sky is dazzling blue and the cobwebs sparkle like paper-cut snowflakes. But I am not a fan of the winter. Grey days and wet weekends are no fun at all.
Suffice to say we are all very much looking forward to Spring! And this year, we feel that there is only one direction for our gardens to be traveling in, and that’s UP!
We have big plans for the beds this year; so big in fact, that we are going to have to be rather innovative with how we use the space that we’ve got. For that reason, we will be making the most of our wonderful obelisks and climbing supports. Not only do they allow us to grow the quantities of everything we want to plant, they also add a delightful depth to the garden, drawing the eye up from the ground which in turn allows us to play with plants at different levels, making the garden feel like an Aladdin’s cave, offering a feast for the eye in every direction.
By now you should be seeing evidence of your potted seedlings poking their heads up for a whiff of air, whether they be indoors on window sills or in the green-house. Remember to ventilate the green house on sunny, warmer days (can you recall the last one of those?!). By April/May, the seedlings should be ready to be transported outside, so a good job to be doing right now is planning how and where to position any supporting frames within the garden.
Apple and pear trees can be pruned this month. And don’t forget to keep feeding and watering the birds!!
